How to boost innovation in media development – knowledge sharing sessions from The Fix Foundation

Editor’s note: The Fix Foundation was born out of The Fix Media’s efforts to support Ukrainian media during the ongoing war (read more about The Fix’s work here). The Foundation aims to build a more connected and resilient media space in Eastern Europe, including via support for innovation and systemic change (read more in the Foundation’s open letter).

Media development is undergoing a transformation. Just as in other industries, questions of product, monetization and market-shaping technologies play an increasingly important role. Entrepreneurship and innovation are on the rise.

But it’s not always easy to access interesting case studies, hear about the latest developments, particularly when press freedom and media security is an issue.

That’s why The Fix Foundation is launching a newsletter specifically targeting the media development community (subscribe here – please note, we might not be able to accept everyone for security reasons), as well as hosting knowledge-sharing sessions for the media development community to share insights and ideas.

The first such session will be held on Monday, September 19, at 14.00 CET and will last 1 hour. The speakers will be:

  • Anouk van der Wallen from the creative agency Lucy will present their work on introducing news items into pirated movie subtitles to reach Russian audiences, who are currently facing an information blackout
  • Mariia Leonova from independent media sales house Infopoint will talk about how they generated over 145,000 euros of incremental revenue for independent Belarusian and Ukrainian media this summer
  • Dariusz Szreter from Zawsze Pomorze, an indy Polish regional media formed by former Dziennik Ba?tycki journalist (bought by state oil company Orlen) will tell about how they left their jobs to fight back against propaganda and about their successes to date
