It is now back in the news as streets protests and upcoming elections are challenging the rule of strongman Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

Challenges to the five-term president are not new, but the current unrest stands out. Social media has helped mobilize people and severe crackdowns on media have not stopped the information from flowing.
